The beginning of Communication

And so it begins……

Boston is three and non-verbal. Which is not uncommon for a kiddo with Down Syndrome. It is however frustrating – for him and for me. This of course is my second time around with beginning the communication process with a non- verbal kiddo. Brookie ROCKED it and seemed to get the yes/no concept over night. Things have not started off as smoothly for Boston. I decided it was time to buckle down. I “Boston proofed” the ipad with a lifeproof case and loaded a communication app on there for him and we are on our way. My goal is to teach him that HE can make choices. HE can decide if he wants a drink, something to eat, a certain toy, another Wiggles movie. We will start with everyday activities that I have gotten in the bad at just “doing for him” and have him DECIDE if he wants it or not. I have also enjoyed loading fun apps for him to play with that will also help him with his fine motor skills!

The nice thing  about this app is that is will grow with him. We start with yes/no and can build on it from there with other choice making/conversation options for him. It also allows you to record your voice on it – so I plan to get Jackson over her to “be his voice.” I think Jackson will love that!

I can’t wait to see him use it. He will LOVE Jackson’s voice talking for him!
